Daytime activities for adults with care and support needs

Remaining socially active and taking part in activities that you enjoy are a good way to stay healthy whether you have care needs, a disability or need support into older age. There are a range of services that can help you to get out and about and be part of your local community.

Coffee morning and lunch clubs

Coffee mornings and luncheon/tea time clubs can give you the opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones while sharing common interests. Many of these clubs are run by local volunteers or faith groups and will provide refreshment (or a meal at luncheon clubs) as well as some activity or entertainment at an affordable cost.

Community groups, clubs, societies and days out

If you have a particular interest or hobby, or if you would like to try something new, there are a range of community groups, clubs and societies in Warrington that you could join.

These groups offer a wide range of activities, from dancing, game mornings, music and crafts to offering information to help with understanding pensions and benefits and filling in forms; others give professional health advice, run light exercise programs or house adult education classes.

These groups may also organise trips to other venues; to indoor bowls, theatre shows or national trust properties, for example.

Befriending/companionship services

Some local voluntary groups offer befriending services.

Befriending schemes offer companionship and support to you or the person you care for. Befriending could mean:

  • A volunteer regularly visiting you for a short time so that you have the chance to talk to someone different, or
  • A weekly phone call from a volunteer so that you, or the person you care for, has a chance to chat. This can be great if you worry about leaving the house.

Warrington Wellbeing Team

The Warrington Wellbeing Team can provide you with information and support about services and support in the community that can help you to stay independent, healthy and reduce social isolation. They can work with you to find out about and introduce you to activities and services that will match your needs and interests.

Structured day services

Day centres/services provide working age adults and older people with both practical assistance and a chance to socialise, with support from trained staff and volunteers. Different centres cater for different groups or people, including older people, those with learning disabilities, physical disabilities or mental health needs. They offer the chance to learn new skills and participate in activities, these include:

  • giving you advice on a range of subjects including building up skills needed for independent living
  • providing gentle exercise and help with mobility
  • providing social activities such as craft and hobbies, games, outings and entertainment

Day centres often offer lunch and refreshments throughout the day, and may also offer transport to and from the centre at an extra cost.

Structured day services are usually arranged by a social care worker, if you are eligible for care and support services.  Please contact Warrington Borough Council’s Adult Social Care First Response team to discuss or arrange an assessment.

Depending on your financial situation, you may be asked to contribute towards the cost of the day services, including an additional charge for transport if you need it.

Supported employment

Supported employment is a way of helping disabled people access and take up employment. With the help of a support worker, you can be assisted to take part in both paid and voluntary employment to suit your skills and interests. Supported employment services are usually arranged by a social care worker, if you are eligible for care and support services.  Please contact Warrington Borough Council’s Adult Social Care First Response team to discuss or arrange an assessment.

Depending on your financial situation, you may be asked to contribute towards the cost of your supported employment.
