Children and Young People's Neurodevelopmental Pathway

Working with our partners and providers we are starting a period of engagement on a proposed new neurodevelopmental pathway for children and young people and their families.

Why are we proposing a new pathway?

In 2018, partners across Warrington agreed to work together to review the pathways for children and young people with neurodevelopmental conditions.  We agreed to take this forward because of:

  • Feedback from families
  • Feedback from the inspection relating to services for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
  • Information gathered that not all aspects of services were in line with the most up to date guidance
  • Information gathered that not all aspects of services were in line with the most up to date guidance

What have we done so far?

We have been using an experience-based design approach to work with families and professionals to understand their experiences of current services and pathways and to co-produce information that will inform proposed improvements to services and support.

One to one interviews have taken place with families and a steering group of staff and volunteers from a wide of organisations have been coming together to discuss a new pathway.  Organisations involved have included Warrington Borough Council, Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, North West Boroughs NHS Foundation Trust, primary care, Warrington Parents and Carers, Warrington Youth Club, Speak Up, Addvanced Solutions, schools including Fox Wood School, Green Lane School and Woolston Brook School.

A co-design event was then held on 3rd April 2019 to enable more staff, Third Sector Organisations and families to share their experiences and co-design a proposed new pathway.  Below is an illustration which captures the highlights and discussions from the event.

Proposed new pathway

From the engagement so far a new system approach to neurodevelopmental pathways across Warrington has been developed.    This would focus less on separate processes for assessment of autism or ADHD.  It outlines a shift of emphasis onto assessment and support for neurodevelopmental conditions more broadly (which includes autism and ADHD).  This would mean a much greater focus on supporting need.  The new pathway can be seen overleaf, it is suggested that you consider the new approach under the three main areas (colour coded):

  • The biginning of the process - a more intergrated approach to early help and referral to ensure easier access to earlier support (GREEN)
  • When multi-disciplinary assessment is needed - a one stop shop approach to help reduce waiting times (ORANGE)
  • After the outcome of the assessment has been shared - future support and care planning (BLUE)

Proposed Neurodevelopmental System Map for Warrington

Core MDT (supported by service level agreements) to include:

  • Pathway Coordinator/Neurodevelopment Specialist Practitioner
  • Community Paediatrician and/or Psychiatrist
  • Speech and Language Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Specialist Nurse
  • Educational Psychologist and/or Specialist Teacher

There should be flexibility/a virtual approach where the needs of child require additional expertise.

Your Feedback

We would like your feedback on this proposed new approach to ensure that it meets the needs of children, young people, families, staff and organisations who will be supporting families through the pathway.

We would like your feedback on:

  • Are you supportive of the pathway?
  • Has anything been missed?
  • Can you think of any challenges we need to address for the new pathway to be implemented? Can you suggest any solutions?

The next phase of engagement will be until Friday 6th September 2019
