- Description
St. Thomas’ C.E. Primary School values the abilities and achievements of all our pupils, and are committed to providing, for each pupil, the best possible environment for learning. We aim to be as inclusive as possible, with the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
As a school community, we work very closely with our parents and carers to support all pupils to achieve their full potential, with an equal focus upon children’s academic achievement and their development as a whole child. We provide high quality teaching for all pupils, with a clear focus upon inclusion within a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum.
What do we mean by Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND)?
At different times within a child’s school career, they may have a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND). The SEND Code of Practice states that:
“A child or young person has SEND if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. A child of compulsory school age has a learning difficulty or disability if they:
- Have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age.
- Have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools.”
If a pupil is identified as having a Special Educational Need or Disability, we will strive to offer provision that is ‘additional to or different from’ the normal differentiated curriculum which is intended to support the pupil to overcome any barriers to learning.’
