Health Check and Screening

Knowing the following signs associated with early onset dementia is important,

• Forgetting about recent conversations
• Person repeating themselves
• Becoming slower at grasping new ideas
• Losing the thread of what is being said
• Confusion which could be about surroundings/time of day or year
• Showing poor judgement and finding it harder to make decisions
• Loss of interest in other people or activities
• Developing a readiness to blame others for taking or misplacing items
• Becomingly increasingly unwilling to try out new things or adapt to change.

If you are experiencing a number of these symptoms then you must contact your GP who may refer you for an assessment.

In our later years, Cancer screening for breast, cervical and bowel cancer checks are a must as early identification of cancer increases the chances of survival.

Health checks offered by GPs to minimise Cardio Vascular Disease will improve your quality of life by offering advice to prevent you from becoming seriously ill in the future.

Bowel cancer

• if you're 55, you'll automatically be invited for a one-off bowel scope screening test, if it's available in your area
• if you're 60 to 74, you'll automatically be invited to do a home testing kit every 2 years
• if you're 75 or over, you can ask for a home testing kit every 2 years by calling the free bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 60

 Breast Screening

Women in England who are aged from 50 to their 71st birthday and registered with a GP are automatically invited for screening every 3 years.

If you're 71 or over, you'll stop receiving screening invitations.  But you're still eligible for screening and can arrange an appointment directly with your local breast screening unit.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening (AAA screening)

In England, screening for AAA is offered to men during the year they turn 65.

If you're a man over 65 and you haven't been screened before, you can ask for a test by contacting your local AAA screening service directly.

If you're a woman or man under 65 and you think you might have a higher risk of AAA – for example, because a close family member has hadone – talk to your GP about the possibility of having a scan to check for an AAA.

Vaccines

Pneumococcal vaccine is for anyone over the age of 65years and is a one off vaccine.

When an individual turns 70 they should be invited for their shingles vaccine.  It is a one off vaccine.   Up to the age of 79 you can get your vaccine if you have missed it.  It is not offered to people over 80.
