Children in Care Health Team

Most children are brought up in their own families, but in Warrington as in other areas a small number of children need to live away from their families and grow up in a range of alternative care arrangements that include foster care, residential care and supported independent living.

These children are described as being ‘in care’ and are the responsibility of the local authority. At any one time there are approximately 250 in care in Warrington.

The Children in Care Health Team is responsible for ensuring that the health needs of these children are addressed and that statutory requirements are met.

The team consists of a Paediatrician, a specialist nurse and admin support.

Paediatrician’s Role

The Paediatrician carries out many of the Initial health assessments, and some of the reviews. The Paediatrician also provides advice to other health care and Social care professionals about the health of the children in care and of foster carers.

Specialist Nurses for Children in Care

The two Specialist nurses work between health and social care. The role of the nurses is to ensure that all children in care have their health assessments.

The nurses carries out the health assessments for children in residential care and young people aged 16-18 and contributes to care planning meetings and children in care reviews.

Initial Health Assessments

When a child/ young person goes into care an initial health assessment should be carried out within 20 working days. This is usually carried out by the paediatricians at the Child Development Centre. The review covers all aspects of health including the height and weight of the child/ young person.

Review Health Assessments

If a child under five remains in care after six months then a further health assessment will be carried out by the health visiting team and every six months after this until the child reaches the age of five years old

Children aged five and over will have a review health assessment carried out by the school health team every 12 months.
